Barcelona Adventure

From the rugged shores of the Costa Brava to Gaudí’s whimsical creations in downtown Barcelona, Spain’s northeastern coast abounds with amazing landscapes. Experience the vibrant city of Barcelona, explore medieval mountaintop monasteries, join in the celebration of a local festival, and wander through colorful fishing villages.

Itinerary

Day 1 Upon arrival in Barcelona, check into the stylish hotel, located just steps from the Gothic quarter. Meet the Spain Adventures Crew this evening at the welcome reception of classic Catalan tapas.

Day 2 Immerse yourself in the magic of architect Antoni Gaudí this morning. Venture into the Sagrada Familia, another worldly cathedral begun in 1882 and not yet finished. Wander along the undulating terraces of Parc Güell and examine Gaudí’s imaginative animal sculptures and mosaics. After lunch near the port, be a participant in life on Las Ramblas, the city’s lively pedestrian streets lined with flower vendors, the beautiful market place and so much more.

Day 3 Set out for the Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat, a medieval sanctuary nestled in the mountains outside Barcelona. Spend the day learning about the mysterious “Black Virgin” Morenata statue. This afternoon we tour a cava cellar and sample cava, Catalonia’s celebrated sparkling wine.

Day 4 Our art historian will take you on a private tour of the Museu Picasso this morning. The artist spent a good part of his youth in Barcelona and the vast collection here showcases his early periods. Catch the excitement as you find yourself in the middle of musical performances, sporting events, and a parade of giant wooden puppets.

Day 5 We head north along the Costa Brava to Cadaqués, located on a peninsula at the edge of the mountains. This afternoon, get acquainted with this fishing village and its charming port. Gather for a seaside dinner at sunset.

Day 6 Explore the imposing monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, a Romanesque gem that dates back to the ninth century. Then we’re off to the picturesque fishing town of Port de la Selva.

Day 7 Step back in time in the medieval village of Perelada. With its maze of narrow lanes set against the backdrop of the Pyrenees. This afternoon, sample local vintages at the magnificent Castillo Perelada. Celebrate this adventure at our farewell dinner tonight.

Day 8 Barcelona Transfer to the airport early this morning for your return flight.

A Taste of Camino

Just a “Taste” of the Camino

Travel along the last 100 kilometers of the Camino de Santiago

Our adventure along the Camino de Santiago, Europe’s legendary pilgrimage takes us through the Spanish countryside, showing us its people, its food, it’s past and present until we reach Santiago de Compostela the final destination of the adventure.

On the “Taste” of the Camino, we follow the Way of St. James along the same path as the pilgrims who are walking and hiking with van support for anyone who wants it.  We believe that everyone should make their way along the Camino de Santiago and so we are happy to offer a as much or as little support from our van..

When you’ve checked out the other companies that can take you along the Camino, you will find that our price is competitive and our tour of the highest quality.  That is because we’ve been making this journey since 1995.  We personally know each and every hotel, family run Inn, and restaurant owner and also maintain the integrity of the Camino.

Come travel across Spain with the company that paved the way, let us show you the Camino the way it should be seen….up close and personal.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in the beautiful city of León, once the capital of the ancient Kingdom. You will be greeted by your Spain Adventures specialists and after a welcome lunch and brief presentation of the days to come, the adventure begins. We visit the magnificent Cathedral of Leon with a prominent historian of Leon and later we visit the Basilica. This evening is your official welcome dinner in one of Leon’s most popular areas, El Barrio Humedo.

Day 2 We leave Leon and shuttle to Astorga this morning where we visit Gaudi’s Bishop’s Palace. Astorga is known for little pastries called mantecados and chocolate and so we stop in the pastry shops and visit the chocolate factory. After lunch we make our way to the Bierzo where we visit a winery. We get our first glimpses of the green Galician countryside.

Day 3 Today we make our way up to a beautiful little hamlet of Celtic houses and a church which houses the chalice of a 14th century legendary miracle. This afternoon we head to Samos and visit one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Spain, founded by the Apostle of Galicia, San Martin Dumiense in the 6th century. The frescos and the magnificent Cloister of the Nereids dating from the 17th century will amaze you.

Day 4 Our destination is a town rebuilt stone by stone exactly as it was in 993A.D. Today the roads will take us through lush green forests and primitive farms still worked as they were a thousand years ago.
Tonight we dine with our friend and host watch wide-eyed as he offers his special queimada a tradition of Galicia, which conjures up tales of witches and spirits.

Day 5 Our journey to Palas del Rei is marked by cruceiros and many historical remnants along the way. This area is one of the most important to art historians throughout the world because of its abundance of Romanesque architecture. Our shuttle awaits to take us to our accommodations for this evening, a traditional, magical, pazo owned by the same family for 300 years. Prepare to dine as Kings and Queens.

Day 6 The first stop today is a “factory” where cheese is made as it was hundreds of years ago. The route today is dotted with small hamlets hidden among the eucalyptus trees all within a short distance from one another. While most days are about the art, architecture and history of the Camino, today is all about the local cheeses and of course if there is cheese; there is wine! We stop at one of our favorite wineries where after a lovely walk through this family winery, we sit down to a formal wine tasting. This winery has been owned by the same family for four generations. Here, the grapes are harvested by hand and is a family affair. Grandmother who is 85 still comes to work each day. She oversees the day to day operations her father taught her when she was a child.

Day 7 With all the wine and cheese we enjoyed yesterday, it seems fitting that we take a short walk through the magical eucalyptus forests that ascend the Monte de Gozo where, from the top of the mountain we see Santiago de Compostela for the very first time. This is an exciting stop for the pilgrims as they realize that their journey to Santiago is coming to an end. You will notice the energy and anticipation all around you.
We make our way into the city and follow the familiar yellow arrows that have guided so many for days; until we see the cathedral before us. We’ll visit the Cathedral and go off on our own for lunch. The afternoon is yours to explore the many ruas of this beautiful city. Tonight we meet for our farewell dinner at our spectacular hotel and celebrate a journey you’ll remember always!

The Camino and Yoga

Taste of the Camino - The last 100 kilometers

Europe’s legendary pilgrimage takes us through the Spanish countryside, showing us its people, its food, it’s past and present until we reach Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Add to this journey a Yoga mat and an extraordinary instructor and you have the ultimate Camino de Santiago!

Each day begins with an all levels yoga practice. Using the breath as our guide, vinyasa yoga transitions us smoothly from one posture to the next in a meditative seamless flow, connecting movement with the inhale and the exhale. We will focus on poses that complement our hiking…. sun salutations, hip openers, arm balances and core strengtheners. Evenings may find us winding down with yin yoga, restorative poses, gentle inversions and perhaps a guided meditation.

Our practice will open your mind and body to the events the day will bring. We than embark on our adventure through meadows and forests which will take us closer to our destination. At the end of the day we stretch and then dine in old world charm, in the company of our friends and other pilgrims.

Treasures of Andalucia

Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada are indeed the “treasures of Spain”

Narrow, shady streets with geranium covered balconies and green terraces of olive trees that shimmer under the Mediterranean sun. We travel across rolling hills that are ideal for cycling, exploring a countryside dotted with white-washed villages. This tour travels through three major cities of Spain; Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada.

Their ancient cultures create a magical quality of life that beckons you to a slower rhythm and summons the Gypsy in all of us.

If you’ve never been to Spain, join us on this tour and discover the treasures of Andalusia!

Itinerary

Day 1 Sevilla: Connected by plazas fragrant with sweet orange blossoms, we tour Seville’s Cathedral and the Jewish Quarter of Santa Cruz. Enjoy the dry sherry at our orientation gathering before dinner this evening. Tonight after our Tapas dinner, fiery Flamenco will awaken your senses to the colors of Spain.

Day 2 Carmona: Mudejar churches and winding cobbled stone streets. Today’s our route takes us through fields of poppies, wheat and rows and rows of sunflowers that take us to a walled city settled by the Romans.

Day 3 & 4 Cordoba: Rich green farmland and past the grazing bulls to the ever imposing castle of Almodovar. We’ll visit the intriguing 8th century Mezquita. Tonight we dine on traditional time honored recipes before we visit a “tablao” to listen to Spanish guitar players as they take us to another time and place with their music. Pueblos blancos, Almond orchards and olive groves give us our picturesque landscape as we travel through the Sierra Subetica

Day 5 & 6 Granada" This “ruta tranquila” takes us in and out of the fertile Genile River Valley to the birthplace of 19th century poet Federico Garcia Lorca. We’ll tour the breathtaking Alhambra with an art historian and this evenings’ farewell dinner in a 14th century mansion will offer stunning views of this enchanting city.

Educational Tours

The perfect trip for Spanish students of all levels

Overnight flight to Spain

Itinerary

Day 1 Madrid – Leon: Arrival in Madrid
After clearing customs you are greeted by your bilingual Tour Director, who will remain with you throughout your stay. Transfer with a stop for lunch.
We travel 350kms North to the region of Castilla y Leon. This region is known for its’ mixture of mountains, flat lands, forests and fields of wheat. The monumental and artistic heritage of the province includes the Romanesque, Mudéjar, Gothic and Plateresque styles, all of which grew up alongside the Pilgrim’s way to Santiago. Today you will arrive in the city of Leon where modern conveniences and most technology are always at your fingertip.

Accommodations
Our students are housed in a beautifully remodeled and comfortable dormitory, the best of its kind in León for the first 7 days of the program. The dormitory is equipped with individual and double rooms, Conference rooms, a dining hall, and a student lounge. It is centrally located and a few steps from downtown and most places of interest. Since everything is within walking distance of the dormitory, going to the stores, the market place, the bakery, the ice cream shop and the restaurants where our students are forced to order in Spanish, it is considered as doing field work. All these places become a natural extension of the classroom. The main entrance of the dormitory is supervised by a concierge 24 hours a day. Students are issued identification cards with their names, their pictures, and the dormitory address and phone number. This I.D. card is presented and left with the supervisor on duty when entering the dormitory. The card is returned to the student upon exiting the dormitory and is to be used as an I.D. in the city. This system is very efficient in safeguarding the security of the dormitory and is an effective tool to determine whether the students are in the dormitory or not when there is a call or someone is looking for them. When we begin the Camino de Santiago portion of the program, students will be staying in “casas rurales” which are beautiful country Inns that are run by families. This type of accommodations ensures that the students will be exposed to family life and be able to participate in activities as they relate to pilgrims walking the Camino.

Meals
All meals are served in the residence, except during excursions and special occasions when students dine in local restaurants. Breakfast is served from 8:30AM to 9:00AM, lunch from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, and dinner from 8 PM to 9 PM. Meals are habitually taken much later in Spain than in any other country in Europe; therefore having “tapas” (snacks) in between meals is a very popular Spanish tradition. The food in the dormitory is varied and well-presented. Fresh salads are served both at lunch and at dinner, accompanied by pasta, potatoes, vegetables, or beans, with steak, chicken or fish.

Day 2-7 Language School: On the first day, students will participate in a brief morning orientation of the Language School in Leon followed by a walking tour of the city, led by our local art historian.
Begin Spanish Classes – Students learn to speak and practice the lively Spanish language with lessons that focus on comprehension of everyday situations, such as going to the market or shopping, ordering in a restaurant, talking about current events and by just becoming a participant in this new environment. A beginner knowledge of the language is recommended however is not necessary.

Days 8-15 El Camino de Santiago: We have found the combination of classroom structure with outdoor activities that compliment and reinforce language acquisition to be fun and very productive. Our “walk across Spain” along the last 100 kilometers of the Camino de Santiago offers all the components that a young person looks for in learning experience; it’s practical, easy and fun.
All accommodations along the Camino are country houses and small hotels where the owners, usually a family, are always present to provide a high standard of quality and service and more importantly, a great deal of TLC.

Wine Country Sampler

Oh those Spanish wines!

The Spanish wine regions of La Rioja and Ribera del Duero are two of the most famous and prestigious wine producing areas in the world.

This unique wine tasting journey takes in winery visits to the smaller privately owned “bodegas” as well as the renowned Estate of Dinastia Vivanco.

Apart from wine tasting, you’ll enjoy delicious regional cuisine in charming local restaurants and your accommodations in the Rioja will be a delightful off the beat and path wine hotel.

This Spanish Wine Country Tour begins in Leon one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. While the great cities such as Barcelona attract many tourists, Leon is thankfully far less crowded. The Barrio Humedo offers many tabernas which offer regional foods, great wines and plenty of local color. Architecturally it has much to offer with its beautiful Gothic Cathedral which boasts some of the most stunning stained glass windows in the world and the Casa Botines which was designed by Antonio Gaudi.
