Just so you know:
Burgos was known as the capitol of Old Castile during the middle ages. The city is also significant for its associations with the medieval warrior Rodrigo Vivar Diaz, better known as "El Cid." El Cid is present everywhere from hotels to restaurants.
Outside of Burgos is the monastery of Las Huelgas Reales founded in 1187 by Alfonso VII and his wife, Eleanor of Plantagenet. The nuns still kneel in long hours of devotion, on the oak floors which were laid in the sixteenth century. Also of interest is one of the finest Romanesque cloisters in Europe at Santo Domingo de Silos; The Benedictine monks of Silos perform an impressive chant, and their recordings have reached the outside world in recent years. |
