Andalucia Adventure Bike Tour

Given its location at the western end of the Mediterranean, it’s not surprising that so many cultures – Moors, Visigoths, Romans and Greeks – have crossed paths in the southernmost part of Spain. This Andalucia Adventure Bike Tour follows the paths of the Caliphs and of Washington Irving, author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, who stayed in the Alhambra Palace while serving as the American ambassador to Spain in the 1840s.

Our Andalucia Adventure Bike Tour route includes an old rail road track perfectly adapted for pedaling, smaller country roads and paths which are ideal for all levels of cyclists. Our accommodations are in lovely inns and smaller hotels with individual charm in picturesque villages of Andalucia. Our cuisine is traditional Andalusian dinning which includes some excellent wines.

Our support van is with you from the beginning of your Andalucia Adventure Bike Tour until the end and is available for shuttles throughout the route. Our routes take you through incredible landscape of olive groves and cork trees, on rolling hills. If you are up for a challenge we can always lengthen the route for you. When traveling with children and young adults or guests who prefer a leisurely ride the route can be lengthened or shortened each day (depending on the group’s bicycling skills.)

Day 1: Madrid
We will meet you at the airport on arrival and take you to the hotel in Madrid center. This is a great opportunity to visit this magical city on our walking tour. The afternoon is free to visit the nearby Prado Museum, la Plaza de Sol, or just relax in one of the many cafes.  We meet tonight for a brief orientation meeting and then we’re off to our welcome dinner in a typical Tapas restaurant.

Day 2: Cordoba
We leave Madrid early in the morning by van and stop in Toledo to visit the spectacular walled city. We will also make a stop in the land of Don Quijote, La Mancha, to see the ancient windmills made famous by the novel. There are options for you today.   If you prefer to go directly to Cordoba, we recommend that you travel by AVE fast train from Madrid in the morning and we will meet you in Cordoba in the evening.  We will make arrangements for you to visit the incomparable Mezquita and leave you with time to explore the many cobbled stone streets of the city. This evening we meet for dinner in a lovely “patio” restaurant.

Day 3: Zuheros (CORDOBA)
Total distance 40 Kms. flat terrain.
After breakfast, we’ll shuttle by van to visit a winery in the town of Montilla, then we’ll head to Lucena and start riding east on the “Via Verde del Aceite” rail trail – a railway line which has been converted into a recreational trail for walkers, hikers and horseback riders. We’ll stop and have lunch at the converted train station in the town of Cabra (now an interpretation centre). This afternoon, we’ll continue to the charming town of Zuheros, nestled in the Sierra Subbética mountain range, and have dinner at the hotel.

Day 4: Priego de Cordoba
Total distance 40 Kms. rolling terrain.
The Sierra Subbética is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in Andalusia, and we’ll get to see some of it today as we ride to Luque, famous for the imposing ruins of its Moorish castle, and to Priego de Córdoba, known for its 17th and 18th century palaces.

Day 5: Granada
We’ll start the day by visiting the castle of Alcalá la Real, and from there, we shuttle to Puerto López, where we’ll get on the bikes and ride through countryside to Moclín, which boast stunning views of the Sierra Nevada and ride down the hills to just outside of the city of Granada.  Tonight we have the option witness flamenco in its most authentic form in the caves of Sacramonte.

Day 6: Granada
Ah, Granada!   To truly take Andalucia with you forever is to be able to spend many hours in the corridors and gardens of the Alhambra Palace, the most complete and beautifully restored Moorish building in Western Europe. After exploring this treasure you’ll visit the Albayzín neighborhood filled with treasures of its own.  At sunset, we will take you up to the Mirador de San Nicolás for the most perfect view of the Alhambra’s red walls, backed by the peaks of the Sierra Nevada.  Today for a treat, visit the traditional Moorish baths, and seize the opportunity to soak in a ham am , while on your Andalucia Adventure Bike Tour.

Day 7: Departures

Departures after  breakfast.  You may opt to continue your trip and head to Sevilla or we can organize extra nights in other cities.  Plan on keeping the guide and the vehicle for a more customized extension.  Please call us for our recommendations. This Andalucia Adventure Bike Tour is so much fun.
